Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's ODI Squad Versus Team India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-game ODI series facing India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a unexpected call-up.
Recent Form Result in Exclusion
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI team following being dismissed for one in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a top score of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.
The batsman has featured in 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now work towards a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Updates
Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a red-ball recall as Australia seek a solution to their opening batting issues.
Pace Additions and Fitness News
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after taking a break since starring for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the lead up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Schedule
Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to seal a series clean sweep last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
