The UK Foreign Office has included an additional eleven further nations to its public warning list regarding the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.

This expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a global increase in the incidence of documented incidents" of methanol contamination.

Just recently, officials had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to several high-profile events such as the deadly loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that even minimal doses of industrial alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Used?

Methanol is a poisonous substance typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not meant for drinking.

While it is generated during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the purification method.

Yet in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to identify.

Official Advice for Tourists

Authorities official Hamish Falconer said that every traveler should be aware of the signs of methanol toxicity.

"When you are consuming alcohol abroad, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of local brews or unspecified beverages," the official advised.

"In case something seems unusual, such as a headache that's way worse than usual or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor immediately."

The entire list of destinations listed as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
